Hair Loss Treatments for Women
One should be careful when choosing hair loss treatments for women. This is because there are a number of different factors than can bring about female hair loss. These include stress, disease and temporary hormonal fluctuations. It is very important that underlying medical conditions are ruled out before any treatment for hair loss is used. Addressing the causal medical condition will also resolve the hair loss problem.
Depending on the cause of hair loss, there are number of different possible solutions that a doctor may recommend.
Medication
There is still a lot of dispute over the use of medicines as hair loss treatments for women. This is because the improper use of medication could cause more hormonal problems for women. There is only one topical medicine approved by the FDA for female hair loss and that is Rogaine or Minoxidil.
Other medicines used for female hair loss are meant for other conditions and are used off label for hair loss. In general, hair loss medication either blocks DHT or stimulates hair growth. Some women may also opt for hormone replacement therapy or the use of certain contraceptives to address the problem of hormonal imbalance.
Artificial Solutions
It is not entirely accurate to say that artificial solutions are hair loss treatments. For women who do not like taking artificial medication however, these may be good enough. You can use a concealer, wig or extensions to make diffuse hair loss less obvious.
Laser Treatment
With laser treatment, one may opt to be treated in a clinic or to use a take home laser comb. Both types of treatment use low laser levels to thicken hair. In general, laser treatment is said to be able to encourage better blood flow and follicle regeneration.
Surgery
The most common surgical treatment for female hair loss is transplantation. Hair from a different part of the scalp, usually form the back, is transplanted to balding areas. An alternative surgical option is scalp reduction in which a portion with hair is stretched over portions without hair.
Natural Solutions
Some individuals who do not like the idea of invasive surgery or artificial medication may choose natural solutions. One option is to take vitamins for hair loss. Vitamin B6 is often one of the most recommended hair vitamins. It is believed to play a role in promoting healthy blood cells which transport nutrients and oxygen to the follicles.
Aside from plain vitamins supplements, some natural products also claim to be hair loss treatments. They claim to use 100% natural ingredients that will not cause side effects. Common ingredients include vitamins and herbal extracts. Natural products however are not FDA approved and may not always be backed by extensive scientific studies. Hence, once should be careful with natural hair loss products.
Apparently there are a lot of options for women when it comes to hair loss treatments. Once again though, great care should be exercised in the choice and use of any treatment. If you seriously want to pursue a treatment option, always consult a doctor so you can choose the right solution.
