Women with Hair Loss- Drug Treatments to Consider

Drug treatments are among the most dangerous to consider for women with hair loss. This is simply because inappropriate medication can easily lead to health consequences for women.

To date only Minoxidil is approved by the FDA for the treatment of female pattern baldness. Nonetheless, some doctors may opt to recommend other drug options. Some of these however are not always made specifically for female hair loss in which case, they are recommended off label.

Here are some of the possible drug treatments for women with hair loss:

Minoxidil

As mentioned, this is the only FDA approved drug for hair thinning in women. Only 2% of the topical version is recommended for female use. In most cases, this drug is more effective in young individuals than in older ones. Only about 20% to 40% of users experience moderate to minimal results after three months or more of use. Minoxidil has to be used consistently. Once its use is discontinued, hair loss will resume.

Finasteride

This is a drug treatment for men. Some expert sources however do not entirely agree about prohibiting it for women. Some say it can be used for females but under strict medical supervision. Those that argue against this opinion however, state that Finasteride is not approved by the FDA for women. It is potentially dangerous for women who have plans of getting pregnant or who are already pregnant.

Aldactone

This is a drug that can be used before a woman undergoes menopause. It limits the production of androgen and blocks existing androgen. As mentioned in the in the article about the main cause of female hair loss,  male hormones may be responsible for a number of cases of hair fall in women.

Hormone Pills

Since low estrogen levels play a part in female hair shedding, it would make sense to try to increase the levels. Hence, one possible solution is to take pills for hormone replacement.

Corticosteriods

There are other types of female hair loss aside from that caused by hormones. One of these is an autoimmune disorder in which immune system cells attack the hair follicles. Corticosteroids can help inhibit the immune system and stop it from causing this type of hair problem in women.

Cimetidine

This drug is originally intended for the treatment of stomach ulcers. It has also been known to help reduce excess facial hair in women. As a female baldness treatment, it is said to be able to block the male hormones that shrink hair follicles in women.

Contraceptive Pills

There are different kinds of contraceptive pills. In fact, some types may even lead to more falling hair. Those that can prevent women from losing hair are designed to lessen the production of androgen.

Ketoconazole

This topical treatment is often more popularly known through the brand name Nizoral. It is best used against fungi. Since it can inhibit the production of male hormones in women, it has some potential at helping prevent balding.

It is possible to safely and effectively treat women with hair loss through drugs. It can never be stressed enough though that only one drug is officially approved. If you choose to use other drugs, make sure you do so only after consulting with your doctor. You should ask your doctor for a solution that will not put your health at risk.
